Overrated
There are few things that we here at pop5 like to discuss (read: vehemently argue over) more than movies. A few months ago (before we had a website), Premiere Magazine had an article about the 20 most overrated movies of all time. Since nothing improves a website like some bloodthirsty, acrimonious debate, I'm going to post the list here, and let the pop5 crew duke it out in the comments section. I'll show you how it's done. By the way, if we have any readers out there who aren't part of the crew, feel free to join in. The comments are open to all.
Premiere Magazine's Top 20 Most Overrated Movies (in alpha order):
2001: A Space Odyssey
A Beautiful Mind
American Beauty
An American in Paris
Chariots of Fire
Chicago
Clerks
Easy Rider
Fantasia
Field of Dreams
Forrest Gump
Gone with the Wind
Good Will Hunting
Jules and Jim
Monster’s Ball
Moonstruck
Mystic River
Nashville
The Red Shoes
The Wizard of Oz
The question is, are they overrated? Do they deserve to be on the list?

Comments
2001: A Space Odyssey: Yes. I saw it a while ago, so I might react differently if I were to see it again today.
A Beautiful Mind: Absolutely. Horrible schlock.
American Beauty: I liked it when I saw it in the theater, but I haven’t seen it since, so my gut reaction is no.
Chicago: I liked it, I disagree.
Clerks: NO WAY!! Although, I will admit that if you never lived in Jersey, you may not get the point in a lot of ways.
Easy Rider: YES!!!
Forrest Gump: I still think well of Forrest Gump. The story is a little precious, but I think it is a good movie.
Gone with the Wind: No way.
Good Will Hunting: Did Robin Williams deserve an Oscar for it? No. But I don’t think the movie was that bad.
Moonstruck: I liked Moonstruck.
Mystic River: YES!!! YES!!!! How that piece of crap was so successful I will never know.
The Wizard of Oz: I don’t think you can say it is overrated. I definitely never need to see it again, though.
Never seen it: An American in Paris, Chariots of Fire, Fantasia, Field of Dreams, Jules and Jim, Monster’s Ball, Nashville, The Red Shoes.

2001: A Space Odyssey- i concur. the pace is extremely slow and the story is somewhat weak.
A Beautiful Mind- pure crap. opie left out some facts and crowe stinks.
American Beauty- ok movie, but not great. seeing thora birch buck naked is worth it.
Clerks- no way. this is a really great movie with excellent dialogue. the acting isn't the best, but i watch movies for the story first.
Easy Rider- please. the only good part is when capt. america's cycle blows up.
baby boomers need to get a life. they should make a sequel where capt. america didn't die and show how he's a sellout; a multimillionaire businessman sticking it to gen x and y and telling them how to live.
Field of Dreams- i liked it, but it is overrated. it just proves the eighties were lame.
Forrest Gump- i liked it.
Gone with the Wind- definitely stinky.
Good Will Hunting- haven't seen because it didn't sound interesting.
Moonstruck- i agree.
Mystic River- never saw, but i think it probably sucked.
The Wizard of Oz- i have always hated (HATED) this movie.
Never seen-
An American in Paris, Chariots of Fire, Chicago, Fantasia, Jules and Jim, Monster's Ball, Nashville, The Red Shoes

Clerks shouldn't be on this list. gone with the wind sucks eggs. birth of a nation should be on this list.

Why all the hate towards Easy Rider? Yes, it's dated a bit but it's all about the freedom, man.
Fantasia is a brilliant piece of experimental animation and I thought for sure you geeks would love the hell out of it.
About a week ago I watched Nashville twice and it is a great film, probably Altman's best. A cynical look at American values using the platform of politics and entertainment. Great stuff and Karen Black is sexy as hell (see Easy Rider for more). Goddamm I love that woman.
